Are You Drinking Your Two Litres Of Toxic Water Each Day?

It seems like the ideal time to write a post on water. Firstly, I live on the Sunshine Coast, where residents have just witnessed the devastation that water can bring after experiencing a frightening flash flood. Secondly, I have just learnt that yesterday was World Water Day, an international day to highlight the lack of access to safe, clean drinking water. Thirdly, tomorrow Queenslanders will be electing their next Premier. So what’s that got to do with toxic water? Read on to find out! What is Dragon Fruit?

I was shopping at my local health food store and I came across a box of bright, almost fluorescent, pink fruit that beckoned to me to come closer. Naturally curious, I could not resist buying one so I could find out more about it. One of the great things about not shopping for food at mainstream supermarkets (one of my real food resolutions for 2012) is discovering new foods. So today’s blog post is to talk about one of the new foods I’ve discovered – dragon fruit. Continue reading What is Dragon Fruit?

Roasted Pumpkin and Cauliflower Soup

Since this is a blog about all things to do with food I thought it’s time to share a recipe about some of the foods I enjoy. I love cooking, experimenting with recipes and preparing yummy foods. I am grateful to my Father for instilling in me a great respect for food and cooking with fresh, real ingredients. I did not grow up eating meals such as curries or pasta sauces full of artificial ingredients bought from the supermarket out of jars or tins.   Continue reading Roasted Pumpkin and Cauliflower Soup

How Much Time Is Wasted By Dieting?

Almost two decades of my life was spent going on never-ending diets in search of the Holy Grail of weight loss so I could acquire the body of a supermodel and live life happily ever after. I finally stopped this insane cycle after realizing the damage it was causing and decided I did not want to spend the rest of my life being obsessed with weight loss and being a certain size and shape. In the process of breaking free from the dieting trap, I have wondered how much time I have wasted thinking about diets, food, my body and weight loss and what I could have done differently with my time. Real Food Resolutions: Three Week Review

It’s about three weeks into 2012 and normally by this time most resolutions made at the start of a new year, although made in good faith, have fallen by the wayside. I heard recently that after three weeks into a new year the majority of people have abandoned their goals. I’m sure that most people are motivated and inspired to reach new goals for the first two weeks but by the third week the reality that some effort needs to be applied to achieve a goal might just be a bit much! The good news is that since today is the start of Chinese New Year, it offers another opportunity to revive those abandoned resolutions! Woo hoo! Continue reading Real Food Resolutions: Three Week Review

Is Self-Worth Dependent On Your Size And Shape?

When we lose twenty pounds…we may be losing the twenty best pounds we have! We may be losing the pounds that contain our genius, our humanity, our love and honesty. ~ Woody Allen

Wow! I saw this thought-provoking quote by Woody Allen today. Messages the weight industry use to promote their weight loss strategy can be very harmful. Too often advertising talks about what we will gain when the dieter loses weight. Typical gains that are suggested include our health, energy levels, confidence, self-respect, a new career, romance with a new partner and so on. It’s rare to hear what one may have lost in the journey to lose weight. Continue reading Is Self-Worth Dependent On Your Size And Shape?

The Diet Voodoo Doll: The Latest Technique In The Fight Against Obesity

The latest technique in the fight against obesity is sure to be a success. The diet voodoo doll comes with a set of pins to motivate the dieter to stick to their diet. The diet voodoo doll has phrases on its body such as “put it down”, “if you eat that, your arse will grow,” and more lovely, warm phrases that will fill anyone with a warm glow inside. Apparently after sticking pins in the doll, the fear of voodoo curses will motivate the dieter to keep going. Continue reading The Diet Voodoo Doll: The Latest Technique In The Fight Against Obesity

Is ‘Fat’ A Politically Incorrect Word?

I don’t like hearing about political correctness. Whenever I hear this expression in the media it’s usually as a result of someone deciding that a word or song that has been used for decades is suddenly offensive to a minority group and must be banned. The complaint about the “offensive” expression usually doesn’t even come from the minority group.

Examples of such political incorrectness are:

1. “Merry Christmas” should be expressed as “Seasons’ Greetings”.

2. “Fairy Penguins” are now known as “Little Penguins” (in order not to offend the gay community). Continue reading Is ‘Fat’ A Politically Incorrect Word?
