I watched a documentary on TV last week called “The People’s Supermarket”. The documentary was based on a new type of supermarket based on connecting the community, reducing food wastage and providing an alternative way of food buying rather than going to big chain supermarkets. The People’s Supermarket is based in London and the documentary followed the challenges and successes in starting The People’s Supermarket.
The mission of The People’s Supermarket, as quoted on their website is:
“Our vision is to create a commercially sustainable, social enterprise that achieves its growth and profitably targets whilst operating within values based on community development and cohesion. Our intent is to offer an alternative food buying network, by connecting an urban community with the local farming community”.
I watched the first part of the four part series. What I found interesting was the amount of food that supermarkets throw out. The food wastage could have fed thousands, if not more. Although my last post was on why I like shopping at Farmer’s markets, I would prefer to shop at this type of supermarket than big chain supermarkets!
So when is it on? It’s on Australian television on Thursday nights at 8:30pm on the ABC1 for the next three weeks!
